Understated neutrals (natural wood stain, white countertops, creamy walls) are made to feel more special in their neutrality - peaceful even - when paired with matte black hardware. Black is the neutral that pairs well with anything, right? Not necessarily. In a small space especially, too much black can feel very heavy and daunting to the eye. But when used sparingly as a thin border (mirrors), unique accent lines (lighting) and/or cabinetry jewelry (hardware), black plays a supporting role and helps the more muted tones in a space feel intentionally colorless.
